Wrexham Bowling League Club History

The Challenge Cup has been presented to the winners of the top division of the Wrexham League since 1927. The League has also been known as the East Denbighshire Amateur Bowling League 1927 – 1974, Wrexham Maelor Bowling League 1975 – 1984, Wrexham & District Bowling League 1984 – 2003 and as from 2004 the Wrexham Premier League.

Esclusham Bowling Club won the top division of the Wrexham League (then known as the East Denbighshire Amateur Bowling League) for the first time in 1939, some seven seasons after joining the League in 1933. The Club had finished runners up to the Parciau in 1938 and by this time had also established a reserve side in the second division. Another four Wrexham League titles followed in 1940, 1943, 1946 and in 1951.

However, the Club went into decline in the late 1950’s until the mid 1970’s with the slump culminating in 1970. In this year the Club suffered it’s lowest ever Wrexham League finish (2nd from bottom of Division 2). Additionally, between 1957 and 1973 the Club only fielded one team. A far cry from the 4 teams that operate in the Wrexham League today.

The renaissance began in the mid to late 1970’s with a number of youngsters becoming interested in the sport, many of whom still play for the Club today (see the 1970’s article under Club History for more information on this era).

In the latter part of the 1980’s the Club finished as runners up in the Wrexham League on 5 consecutive occasions before successfully winning the League in 1990 for the first time in 39 seasons

The 2010’s would prove to be the most successful decade in the Wrexham League as it saw the Club win the top division on six consecutive occasions between 2012 – 2017.

The last time the Club won the Wrexham League was in 2017. At this time it was known as the Wrexham Premier League.

From its inception in 1933 to the present day Esclusham Bowling Club has won the Wrexham League Challenge Cup on nineteen occasions making the Club the most successful team to have ever competed in the League.
