W G Roberts Cup

William George Roberts known to everyone as “WG” played for both Coedpoeth and Brymbo in the Wrexham League. He was the honorary Secretary and Treasurer of the East Denbighshire Amateur Bowling Association from 1944 – 1964.

Upon his death in December 1964 (he took ill on the way home from a bowling engagement) it was decided that an appropriate memorial to him would be a Cup played for annually by teams in the Wrexham League. The first competition was held in 1965 and was won by the Turf Bowling Club (see press photograph below). Proceeds from the competition were and still are given to charity.

Esclusham have won this competition on six occasions, the last being in the 2013 season.
