Therefore, the joint longest serving Secretaries were Alan Luckock and John Richard Williams (16 years each). I am sure that anyone reading this article will appreciate how much time, effort and hard work went into being Club Secretary over 16 seasons.

Alan Luckock

Alan joined the Club in the summer of 1978 not long after moving up from London to live in the area. Two years later he was elected as secretary and held this honour between 1980 and 1983.

In 1992 Alan was elected as the Wrexham & District Bowling League Secretary. He was subsequently elected as secretary of Esclusham Bowling Club for the second time in 1999. He held both these positions simultaneously until his untimely death on the 31st of October 2010, aged just 62 years

During his lifetime he spent 19 years as League Secretary, 16 years as Esclusham Bowling Club secretary and was a playing member of the Club for 33 seasons.

He was influential and instrumental in Esclusham Bowling Club having a licensed bar and was second team captain for many years. A game of bowls on a sunny afternoon, a chat, a laugh, cigarette and a pint was where he was at. Alan, RIP mate.

J R Williams

On the opening day of the Club in 1933 the Esclusham Bowling Club chairman said “he felt that everyone owed a deep debt of gratitude to the secretary, J.R.Williams. He had rendered invaluable service and everything he had done was voluntarily”

According to the Binns Cup Final Programme of 1946 “Mr. J.R.Williams was unanimously elected President of the East Denbighshire Amateur Bowling League at the annual meeting held on 9th February, 1946, in succession to the late Mr.E.J.Williams. He has been closely connected with the League for the last 13 years. Has been an active member of the Esclusham Club for many years, and acted as Hon. Secretary since its formation 13 years ago. Mr. J.R.Williams has also been closely connected with the Rhostyllen Council for 40 years both as a member and clerk, and is the present chairman. He and Mrs. Williams have largely contributed to the success of the Esclusham Club and the League and County Association by entertaining and hospitality”
